Suspect Objects Suspect Subjects is a collection of works by artist Faisal Hussain and in this talk we discuss anti-racism in the course of creating the work, the history and inspirations of the artworks with particular references to his hometown of Birmingham. In addition to his arts practice we will also cover some of his work in grassroots activism, working with the South Asian diaspora of Birmingham and decolonial practice

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

FAISAL HUSSAIN

Faisal Hussain creates work that questions perceptions, undermines lazy stereotypes and highlights missing histories and overlooked facts. Whether in music, in a gallery or a sign outside a kebab shop, his cross-disciplinary practice is often presented in varied environments to engage with diverse audiences. Using archive and personal memory as starting points, his work explores the representation and understanding of South Asian culture and identity through the media, government, communities and individuals. His current exhibition – ‘Suspect Suspects, Suspect Objects’ is being run virtually through the Brunei Gallery, SOAS until Saturday 20th March 2021.

DR AMINA YAQIN

Amina Yaqin is a Reader in Urdu and Postcolonial Studies at SOAS. Her research is interdisciplinary and engages with contemporary contexts of Muslim life as well as the politics of culture in Pakistan where she grew up. She has been a collaborating partner on two projects, the Arts and Humanities Research Council funded International Research Network on Framing Muslims and the Research Councils UK funded Muslims, Trust and Cultural Dialogue. She is on the Advisory Board of Anthem Studies in South Asian Literature, Aesthetics and Culture, the Pakistan Journal of Women's Studies, Journal of Research (Humanities) Punjab university and the Journal of Commonwealth Literature. She is an Associate Member of the Postcolonial and Global Literatures Research Group at the Open University. Dr Yaqin is the founding Chair of the Centre for the Study of Pakistan at SOAS and the co-founder of the Centre for Gender Studies. Currently, she is Chair of the Decolonising Working Group, Director of the SOAS Festival of Ideas and Chair of the Centre for the Study of Pakistan.
